What is EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation)?
Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is an electrical therapy that uses electrical pulses to stimulate muscle contraction, thereby strengthening weak muscles, reducing swelling, relieving pain, and promoting wound healing.
Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) uses high-intensity electrical pulses to stimulate peripheral nerves, thereby producing muscle contractions.
These pulses are generated by a device and delivered to the middle of the muscle to be stimulated through electrodes (pads attached to the skin). The pulses generated by EMS simulate action potentials (the stimulus required to make a muscle contract) from the central nervous system, causing the muscle to contract.
