In this study, different strength training methods - muscle building, maximum strength, strength endurance, whole body electromyostimulation (GK-EMS, miha bodytec) and different mixing methods were compared in terms of their effectiveness. The GK-EMS training was carried out with medium stimulus intensity (60%). This was chosen to enable a combination of GK-EMS with a dynamic movement execution, which has so far hardly been scientifically investigated. For sports practice, however, the dynamics of the movement in particular are a decisive factor with regard to the sport motor ability, which is crucial in many sports.


80 sports students with at least 2 years of strength training experience trained the hamstring and leg extension muscles on machines (gym80) in different groups (maximum strength, muscle building, strength endurance, 2x / week, 3 series each) with different additional loads (30-90% of the individual maximum strength (1 repetition Maximum), 3-15 repetitions). Instead, the GK-EMS group performed lunges and squats without additional load, but with electrical stimulation (3 series, 10 repetitions, load / pause 6 s / 4 s, 85 Hz pulse frequency, 350 µs pulse width,  rectangular pulse). The training of all groups was standardized by a visual biofeedback process (mechatronic), so that the individual repetitions had a fixed specification for each group (e.g. 2 s concentric (upward), 2 s eccentric (downward)). The training took place twice a week over a period of 4 weeks. Input and output tests were carried out on force diagnostic devices equipped with force and displacement sensors (mechatronic). Resistances of 40% and 60% of the maximum force should be moved as quickly as possible. The dynamics were measured via the power, which is composed of the product of force [F] and speed [v]. Accordingly, the performance can be increased via the force and / or the speed. 


All strength training groups were able to significantly improve the performance of the leg extension and leg flexor muscles. An important result of this study was that this was done with the exception of the GK-EMS and the mixed GK-EMS / muscle building group via the force factor. Only the GK-EMS and mixed GK-EMS / muscle building groups had significant results in improving speed. The measured performance improved accordingly by a higher speed by approx. 30%. This is of particular importance for sports practice, since the ability to improve speed, which is generally not easy to improve, could be increased within a short time. One explanation for this result in GK-EMS training obviously lies in the direct activation of fast muscle fibers via the electrical stimulus.
